The new headline-grabbing movie which is streaming on the Top 10 list of Netflix is What Lies Below, it is a film that is part science fiction and part a cautionary tale. This article contains spoilers. You should also make sure the person you are watching the movie with is not a murderous human and fish hybrid.
This weird film starts with Liberty “Libby” Wells who is played by Ema Horvath, returning home from summer camp to her mother Michelle played by Mena Suvari, only she realizes her home is not how she left it. It had been just the Wells girls for years but now there is a new man in their lives. Libby comes home to find her mother dating a new man named John who is played by Trey Tucker, things are shown as pretty serious between them.
At first, John seems like an amazing man. He is amazing to look at, he loves Michelle and he makes an effort to get to know Libby. Even then, Libby does not take to him and even the viewers feel a little wary of this character while watching the film. You cannot exactly pinpoint what is wrong with the character, but it does feel off. It could be his job description which is “aquatic geneticist,” which has him turning the basement into a lab so that he can research lampreys. This movie then starts to get weird.
Soon you learn that John’s brilliant guy act is simply a ruse. John is shown to be drawn to Libby in a very inappropriate manner. There is a scene where Libby gets her period for the first time while on a canoe with John, he gets very excited and even licks her blood. Later in the film, their scenes get more sinister with him starting to smell her clothes and seeing her shower. Libby also sees him with another woman which appears as if they are on a date. It is also revealed that John has scales on this back like a mermaid or a fish.
Now, we see more weird scenes in the film which will make you reconsider your reasons to watch it. During the climax of this movie, you find Michelle imprisoned in her basement by John whose real form has been revealed as a human-fish hybrid. It is also shown that Michelle is pregnant with her boyfriend’s demon aquatic baby, but before she gives birth to this baby, her daughter helps her escape. But they fail in their endeavor since John and his fish folk catch them and then focus on Libby. He aims a weird blue light in Libby’s mouth and in the last scene, we find Libby stuck in a tank full of water with various women. She is shown struggling but then she stops struggling and appears peaceful as she realizes that she can now breathe in water. The movie ends with Libby accepting her fate as the new carrier of the fishy generation.
