Covid-19 Vaccinations are on a rise in the U.S. It is only a matter of time before organisations start to get back to normal. To achieve that, companies need to be sure that customers visiting their theaters, stores, and arenas are vaccinated or have negative covid reports. Here is where the “vaccine passport” comes into play.
CNN and The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the government is working on launching a vaccine passport so that citizens can provide their test result for coronavirus and vaccination report via an application on their smartphones. This passport is mostly created to be used for entering entertainment, arts and culture, office spaces and sports arenas. The Department of Health and Human Services is leading the Government’s efforts to create this app and make it available to the public. This was informed to the Post by officials. Developers told the Post that this app would have a QR code that could be scanned through the app. You can pull up your test result and vaccination status on your phone.
This vaccine passport will be available to all American citizens and it is following New York’s steps who has already launched Excelsior Pass. Gov. Andrew Cuomo launched this pass in March which can now be downloaded. The New York state website says the Excelsior Pass results can be saved digitally in the app or it can be printed from the official website of the Pass. “New Yorkers can always show alternate proof of vaccination or testing, like another mobile application or paper form, directly at a business or venue.”
A vaccine passport is a very new concept. Nobody can predict as of now whether this shall become a mandatory norm in the future. Will we be required to show this passport every time we enter an event or a venue?
Insider reported that European Union and the United Kingdom have already announced that they are all set to create a Digital Green Certificate. If President Biden’s government succeeds in creating these vaccine passports, then they would join the ranks of the European Union and the United Kingdom. But President Biden’s administration has not yet confirmed this plan. The Digital Green Cetfiicate would show if the holder of the Certificate has been vaccinated or not, what his or her coronavirus test result is or if he was diagnosed with the infection then that will also be seen in the certificate.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a press briefing on Monday that the development of the vaccine passport will be “driven by the private sector.” Psaki told journalists that “We’re going to provide guidance, just as we have, through the CDC,” “There’s currently an interagency process that is looking at many of the questions around vaccine verification.”
Psaki added the government will not need this vaccine passport. “There are a couple of key principles that we are working from. One is that there will be no centralized, universal federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential.”
