We are seeing lockdown restrictions being relaxed all over the country, with that the country is also going back to its American normal. More than 130 mass shootings have already taken place in 2021. Sunday afternoon witnessed one more black man shot and murdered by the police of Minnesota. He was unarmed. This makes it around 30 men, all Black who were killed by the police in 2021.
Daunte Wright, who was a 20-year-old kid, was killed in a traffic stop by a Brooklyn Center Police Department Officer. Katie Wright, who was Daunte’s mom, told reporters that he was “driving a car that his family had just given him two weeks ago and that he called her as he was being pulled over,”. This was reported by The New York Times.
She added, “He said they pulled him over because he had air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror,” She also said that Daunte’s girlfriend was with him during the incident when he was killed. The Brooklyn Center Police Department however claims that Wright had an arrest warrant issued and he was killed because he was trying to run away.
Daunte was shot in the suburb area of Minneapolis, 10 miles from where ex-police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for killing George Floyd, who was another Black man, unarmed and was murdered by the police. A lot of protests happened all over the world in 2020 when a video that showed Chauvin who was kneeling on George’s neck who was handcuffed went viral. The evidence that has been presented against Derek has been incriminating but the defense is arguing that Floyd passed away because of drug abuse as well as his heart problems. However, expert witnesses and the medical examiner have testified saying that Floyd died directly because of Chauvin kneeling on his neck. However, arguments of the defense, the history of this nation where most officers evade conviction when they kill Black women and men have left a few people skeptical about justice.
The shooting of Daunte, who had a 2-year-old kid occurred after another video went viral which shows a police officer in Virginia pulling Caron Nazario over, threatening him, pepper-spraying him, and pointing weapons at him. He was unarmed, Black, and also a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. This happened on December 5 but the video went viral recently. Nazario was wearing his uniform during the incident and the video shows him speaking to the police officer Joe Gutierrez that he is scared to exit his car to which Gutierrez responds by saying, “Yeah, You should be.”
Nazario filed a lawsuit against both the officers involved on April 2, he accused them of violating his rights and using excessive force. Officials posted an online statement on Sunday which says that Gutierrez has been fired. It says, “We are saddened for events like this to cast our community in a negative light.”
Kimberly Lovett, who is a former property manager of buildings near the police station told reporters, “There are kids in all of these buildings. What we’re fed up with are the police steady killing young Black men.”
