An announcement was made by President Biden that all adults will be eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine from April 19. This news has come right when infections have been on the rise throughout the United States which has intensified the pressure to expand vaccinations so that the number of vaccinated people increases and that can help counter more infectious variants of the virus.
Biden said on Tuesday at the White House, “Let me be deadly earnest with you. We aren’t at the finish line. We still have a lot of work to do. We’re still in a life-and-death race against this virus.”
This new pledge is a change from the President’s earlier plans which were to make sure that vaccinations would be available for 90 percent of US adults by April 19. This goal however can be achieved given the increase being seen in vaccinations throughout the country.
As of Tuesday, as per the CDC, more than 108 million Americans had received a minimum of one vaccine dose, out of which 40 percent are adults and 75 percent are seniors. Almost 63 million people have been fully vaccinated. The vaccination rate of the United States is five times bigger than the world average as per a CNN analysis. Over 3 million Americans receive a Covid -19 vaccination every day.
This rate makes it hopeful for the country to meet President Biden’s goal of reaching 200 million vaccine shots by April 30 which will be Joe Biden’s 100th day in office. The President had announced this goal on March 25 when 100 million shots had been administered in around two months. The weekly average in March was 2.5 million shots being administered every day. If the nurses and doctors continue that average then they can reach the 200 million vaccine goal by the deadline.
This pledge by the President to open vaccinations for all adults is more symbolic. Almost all the states with the exception of Hawaii have already announced making vaccines available for all adults over the age of 18 before or by April 19. Recently, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced on Tuesday that her state’s timeline would be moved to keep up with the President’s timeline.
This announcement by The President does ensure that all the states will be held to the same vaccination regulations as access opens up for everyone. Getting everyone to vaccinate is very important right now. Covid-19 infections are on the rise in many parts of the nation, especially in the Midwest. Experts have been warning about a new surge in Covid-19 infections continuously. They are worried about the spread of new variants. Experts are constantly issuing warnings about restrictions that have been loosened by some states despite rising infection numbers. The increased eligibility and more vaccinations are hopeful news but that is being seen with a rise in Covid-19 cases every day. Experts are warning about a fourth wave of infections.
